Most cameras capture images in a rectangle. However, there are times when cropping the image to square is desired. This could be to eliminate extraneous elements to the image or to add symmetry. In this image the photographer is using the square cropping to focus on the door and sidewalk, and eliminate cars and other distracting street elements.
