An image with shallow depth of field has the subject in sharp focus and the surrounding elements blurred.  The blur effect is known as bokeh.  This technique is great for portraits or close up photography when the subject needs to be isolated from the surrounding elements.  For this image a fairly wide aperture was used along with a specialty macro lens allowing the photographer to get close to the subject.  Depth field when photographing up close can be controlled with the aperture, where the numerically lower number offers shallower depth of field.
